Illinois Personal Injury Resources

If you or a family member have been seriously injured in an Illinois car or truck accident, or if you are interested in traffic safety tips and product safety to avoid an accident or injury, the following links and resources can help you connect with the information you are looking for. If you or a loved one have been injured by the negligence or misconduct of another in northern Illinois, contact Johnson, Westra, Broecker, Whittaker & Newitt, P.C. at our offices in Carol Stream, St. Charles and Chicago.

At the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), you can stay on top of the latest road conditions, including weather conditions, road closures and work zones to help you plan your trip and avoid dangerous areas.

IDOT also has a program called Start Seeing Motorcycles aimed at increasing motorcycle safety with training for riders and enhanced public awareness for drivers to share the road with motorcycles. IDOT’s bicycle pages encourage motorists to share the road with bicyclists and provide tools to help cyclists plan their trips.

Cyberdrive Illinois is a website from the Secretary of State covering everything from titling and registering your vehicle to rules of the road to tips on teen driver safety and the dangers of texting while driving.

Among the many highway safety and consumer programs of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), you will find pages on aggressive driving, impaired driving, motorcycles, teen drivers, older drivers, and other driving safety topics.

If you have been involved in a tractor-trailer truck accident, you will want to review the regulations of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). If the trucker or the rig were out of compliance, this may be evidence of negligence. In addition, you can view the safety records and accident history of the trucking company by searching the Safety and Fitness Electronic Records (SAFER) System database.

For more motorcycle safety tips, see the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, the Motorcycle Industry Council, or the American Motorcyclist Association. You can also find a summary of Illinois motorcycle laws at the AMA website.

Bicyclists can find safety tips and accident advice at Yield to Life, including a detailed look at Illinois bicycle laws and rules of the road.

If you are worried about defective products, visit the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) for concerns about toys, cribs, car seats and a variety of household products and appliances. For concerns about Drug Safety, see the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Also, you can sign up for safety and recall alerts in your email from the CPSC, FDA and other agencies at www.Recalls.gov.

If you or a family member experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI), you can find help and support through organizations such as the Brain Injury Association of America or the Brain Trauma Foundation. In the case of a spinal cord injury, you may want to look into the National Spinal Cord Injury Association or organizations such as the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Determined to Heal, and the Foundation for Spinal Cord Injury Prevention, Care & Cure.
